I have worked as a artist since 2005, and since then my work can be seen across Canada in homes in the United States, and as far as Lisbon, Portugal. My artistic work has a strong focus on wildlife, which comes easily to me as I have a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a focus in Animal Behaviour. I paint with a limited pallet of colours and find that I will custom mix most of my colours to gain the look that I desire. I work in small areas of the canvas with small colour batches, which I attribute to being a mom to younger boys and the need to keep an eye on the clock.
The RCMP are more than a symbolic representation of Canada as they have been instrumental in shaping Canada into what it is now. Like the inscription on the Canadian code of arms - “From Sea to Sea”, the RCMP have been there to protect, serve and “Maintain Le Droit”.
In order to tell the RCMP story I chose the bison to be the animal of focus for me, due to its strong attachment to the RCMP. Through my research it was never clear as to why this animal was chosen to be used as a symbol for the RCMP. There is some belief that it is due to, the strong association between the initial RCMP member’s march west, and the vast numbers bison that roamed freely on the prairies. This series helps illustrate the different aspects of the members life within the career. Each piece within this series, represents five years of service equivalent to a five year service star; there are six pieces in total.
In regards to my life with the RCMP, when I first met my husband I never really put too much thought into what he did as a job. I knew he was a police officer but it never really occurred to me what that meant. As time goes on, you grow and learn from the experiences you are given. Some of the things that I have held on to are the love my husband had for his country, his belief in standing for what is right, and the national pride of being a member of the RCMP.
To honour what my husband chose as a career path for 24 years, as well as thousands of other individuals; I created this series titled “From Sea to Sea”.
